Fire Prevention Week
In 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) proclaimed the second week of October as National Fire Prevention Week in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871. Join the Union Township Fire Department in recognizing Fire Prevention Week™ this fall, October 5-11. The NFPA’s theme for the 2025 Fire Prevention Week is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” Lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a small space. According to the NFPA, these batteries can overheat, start a fire, or explode if overcharged or damaged. By learning how to BUY, CHARGE, and RECYCLE these batteries safely, you can help prevent a fire in your home.
The Union Township Fire Department is committed to ensuring our community remains safe. The NFPA and Union Township Fire Department recommends a few educational and safety tips for lithium-ion batteries.
- When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards.
- When charging devices, always use the cables that came with the product. Buy new chargers from the manufacturer or one the manufacturer approved.
- Charge your device on a hard surface and do not overcharge your device.
- Stop using your device if the battery gets too hot or changes in shape or color. Please move the device away from anything that could catch fire.
- Please recycle batteries responsibly and not in the trash or regular recycling bins. For disposal of these items, please visit Household Hazardous Waste Disposal or reach out to the Clermont County Office of Environmental Quality.
To kick off Fire Prevention Week, the Union Township Fire Department is hosting an Open House on Sunday, October 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Station 51 located at 860 Clough Pike. Join us for a grill out, touch-a-truck opportunities, tours, lithium-ion battery details, and more!
